2001 Defender 110

This 2001 Defender 110 came to Singing Camel from Texas with a collection of mechanical, electrical and drivability issues that needed attention.

The truck wandered on the road and produced popping and snapping noises while cornering. Inspection showed that its blue polyurethane suspension bushings had deteriorated badly. The suspension was completely rebushed using original-style bushings and upgraded with OME shocks and springs.

A compression check showed consistent readings across the engine, while inspection of the upper end found a healthy camshaft and lifters. A leaking valley gasket was replaced, along with the water pump, adjustment pulley and bracket. The intake and thermostat housings were cleaned and refinished, and the project included replacement of hoses, sensors and an updated distributor.

The Defender also suffered from poor idle quality, occasional stalling and no-start episodes, along with a constant battery drain. Additional electrical work addressed loose ends and poor grounds.

The body and paint work grew into a substantial refurbishment. The Rover was dismantled for paint, lower T-piece rust was repaired, and new stainless-steel hardware was used during reassembly. Once completed, the Defender returned to its owner in Austin, Texas.
